Injalak Arts in Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) is world renowned for high-quality figurative paintings. The artists of West Arnhem Land have a lineage of more than 40,000 years and their exquisite and diverse paintings can be seen in rock art galleries through the region.
This artwork has been painted on bark harvested from the Eucalyptus Tetrodonta tree. The bark is carefully cut from the tree and heated over a campfire to relax the cellulose fibres and help it to flatten out. The piece of bark is then weighted down with rocks for 4-6 months, before being painted using the traditional Kunwinjku style. Bark can only be harvested in the wet season (between November and April) when monsoonal rains help the trees to generate moisture in their bark.
